United Nations World Summit for Social Development: Copenhagen 1995

This historic document was agreed by some 168 heads of state at the historic meeting of the UN in Copenhagen in 1995. It is singularly impressive in terms of what over 150 national governments all agreed to and ratified, in terms of commitments to overcoming poverty. It is well worth reading through, to see just how explicit the stated goals were. It is our view that little needs to be added to what has already been agreed quite clearly in this document. All that remains is the “how” question, of putting it into practice. It is in this respect that we seek tools and approaches for more effective co-ordination between the stakeholders in overcoming poverty. The political will was there, the agreements are there, the budgets are already being made available. However, we firmly believe that all this time, effort, energy, attention and resource, could be more effectively deployed and we intend to help achieve that effectiveness. We plan to achieve this through effective education about the Poverty Model and greater motivation of the stakeholders to play their respective roles collaboratively, using best available tools and techniques.
