Non-Governmental Organisations Recognised By The United Nations 2010

The Economic and Social Council of the UN has three levels of recognition of and engagement with NGO’s. In 2010 there were 139 NGO’s recognised as having general consultative status and around another 2000 having special consultative status. A further 1000 approximately were also listed on the relevant ‘Roster’. By way of comparison, the USA alone has over 1 million charities, while even the United Kingdom has over 200,000 that are officially recognised by the UK Charities Commission. In the immediate aftermath of the Haiti earthquake in 2010, over 10,000 NGO’s had set up operations in the country. That’s not people, that’s organisations. That is a lot of organisations to organise.
