International Bill of Human Rights 1948: FactSheet

In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted and proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations: “as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.”

In the International Bill of Human Rights itself, there are plenty more words besides, but the ones above remain key, when it comes to the “Freedom From Oppression” Layer of the 7 Layer Poverty Model. If a person is to be truly free from poverty, we believe that such freedom must include freedom from oppression, where their Human Rights are both recognised and upheld – at a Community and Country level.

A link to the full relevant document is included at the top of the page. Be thankful to those who worked it out, agreed on it and have subsequently sought to uphold and enforce it for us all. Bravo! Also, recognise the work of those like Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org) who seek to monitor abuses of these rights around the world, bring them to our attention and instead advocate the upholding of justice and ‘sticking to the Bill’.
