United Nations Humanitarian Budget Plans By Sector: 2011

In 2011, the United Nations had about US$4 billion it hoped to be able to spend on Humanitarian activities. You can see from the breakdown categories, how there is a degree of commonality already with the 7 Later Poverty Model. The differences are small. For example, the 7 Layer Model opts to put ‘Sanitation’ as part of the ‘Shelter’ Layer, as the global ambition is that part of prosperity should be not having to leave your house to go to the toilet, or otherwise stay ‘sanitary’. The US$4 billion comes largely from the USA and the European Union. Note that this is Humanitarian Aid given specifically through the UN. Donors can and do make additional donations through other routes, outside of the UN’s own infrastructure, for various reasons. The US$4 billion should still be seen against the backdrop of the US$ 1 TRILLION that is the estimated combined wealth of only the World’s 40 richest people in 2013, according to Forbes Magazine. Those wealthy individuals could make a huge difference, but we are convinced that they need persuading that any donations will be spent effectively. We believe the 7 Layer Poverty Model is a vital part of becoming more effective at moving a billion people from poverty to prosperity.
